Most of us have makeup products that have been in our makeup bags for a long time. But just like skincare, makeup has a limited shelf life. Over time, products can change in both consistency and quality, which can make them no longer apply as well as before.
Periodically going through your makeup bag and replacing old products is an easy way to keep both your makeup routine and your products fresh.
Here's a simple guide to help you know how long makeup lasts and when it might be time to replace a product.
What does the small jar symbol on makeup mean?
On almost all makeup and skincare products, there is a small symbol that looks like an open jar. It shows how long the product lasts after it has been opened.
The symbol contains a number followed by the letter M, which stands for months.
For example:
- 6M – the product lasts for about 6 months after opening
- 12M – the product lasts for about 12 months
- 24M – the product lasts for up to 24 months
This symbol is often called the PAO symbol (Period After Opening) and is a good guideline for how long the product should be used after it has been opened.

Mascara – approximately 3 months
Mascara is one of the products that should be replaced most often. Every time the brush is put back into the tube, air and bacteria can enter, causing the product to deteriorate more quickly.
Signs that mascara should be replaced:
- it feels dry
- it starts to crumble
- it smells different
A new mascara often also provides a better result with more volume and better separation of the lashes.
Foundation and concealer – 6 to 12 months
Liquid base products like foundation and concealer often last between six and twelve months after opening.
If the product starts to:
- separate
- change consistency
- smell different
it might be a sign that it's time to replace it.
Lip products – approximately 12 months
Lipsticks and lip glosses often last up to a year. Since they are applied directly to the lips, it's good to pay attention to how the product feels and smells.
If the consistency changes or the scent feels different, it may be time to replace the product.
Powder products – up to 24 months
Products like powder, bronzer, blush, and highlighter often last longer because they don't contain as much moisture.
However, if the surface becomes hard, the color changes, or the product no longer applies as well, it could be a sign that it should be replaced.
Tips to make your makeup last longer
There are also a few simple things you can do to extend the lifespan of your products:
- Always close packaging properly
- Store makeup in a cool, dry place
- Clean makeup brushes regularly
By keeping track of the shelf life, you can ensure that your products both perform better and feel fresh to use.
